Wheelchair access overview
The Sagrada Familia basilica is fully step-free with ramps and an elevator to the crypt museum. The towers are the only inaccessible area due to the final 50-step descent.
Accessible entrance and routes
The accessible entrance is on Carrer de Sardenya (south side, opposite the regular Plaza de la Sagrada Familia entry). Inside:
- Ramps connect the nave, transept and apse.
- The crypt museum has a dedicated elevator.
- The gift shop is at ground level with no steps.
- Wide central aisle for wheelchair maneuvering.
Accessible toilets
Two accessible toilets:
- One in the crypt museum corridor (lower level).
- One near the gift shop (ground level).
Both meet European Disability Standard EN 17210. Baby changing tables included.
Free entry for disabled visitors
Visitors with a disability certificate (Spanish or any EU country) plus one companion enter free. Bring the official disability card. Reservations still required online (selecting "free entry").
Accepted documentation:
- Spanish "tarjeta acreditativa" with disability percentage.
- EU disability card.
- Equivalent national disability card from non-EU countries.
- Doctor letter in English or Spanish (case by case).
Sensory and audio described tours
- Sensory friendly visits: first Saturday of every month at 17:00. Lower lighting, no music. Free with reservation 30 days ahead.
- Audio described tours: tactile model of basilica plus narrative guidance. Free for visually impaired visitors. Reservation 30 days ahead.
- Sign language tours: Catalan and Spanish sign language. First Sunday of every month at 11:00. Reservation 30 days ahead.
What is not accessible
- Towers: not wheelchair accessible. Tower elevators take you up but the descent is a narrow 50-step spiral staircase. Visitors with limited mobility can ride the elevator up but not return down.
- Stained glass close-up: some windows are best viewed from elevated platforms not accessible by wheelchair.
- Sunday mass overflow: the basilica fills at 9am Sunday mass and wheelchair access in the rear can be tight.
Booking accessible tickets
To book free disabled entry:
- Visit the official sagradafamilia.org.
- Select "Reduced entry" then "Free disabled entry".
- Upload a photo of your disability card.
- Confirm a time slot for you plus one companion.
Aggregator sites like Viator do not currently offer the free disabled entry option. Book directly with the basilica.
What most blogs miss
The accessible entrance on Carrer de Sardenya is rarely staffed by attendants who speak English. Bring a translated note explaining your accessibility need. Or arrive 15 minutes early so staff have time to assist without rushing.
