Right Eixample (Eixample Dreta)
The grid blocks directly around the basilica. You can be at the entrance in 2 to 8 minutes on foot. Wide streets, plenty of mid-range hotels and apartments, supermarkets and pharmacies. Expect 120 to 220 euros per night for a 3 to 4 star double in high season. Best for first-time visitors who want to walk to the basilica before the crowds at 9:00.
Around Hospital de Sant Pau
North-east of the basilica along Avinguda de Gaudi, a pedestrian avenue that links the Sagrada Familia with the Sant Pau modernist complex in a 10 minute walk. Quieter at night, good local restaurants, slightly cheaper at 90 to 160 euros. Metro Sant Pau Dos de Maig (L5) is at the top of the avenue.
Lower Gracia
15 to 20 minutes on foot or two metro stops. A village-like grid of small squares, independent shops and tapas bars. Less touristy, more nightlife noise on weekends. Doubles run 100 to 180 euros. Best for travelers who want neighborhood atmosphere and plan to also visit Park Guell, which sits above Gracia.
Glories and Poblenou (budget edge)
East of the basilica, 20 to 30 minutes on foot or 10 by metro and tram. Newer hotels, the Glories shopping centre and the Encants flea market. Cheapest of the four at 70 to 130 euros. Best for budget travelers and those arriving by car, as parking is easier here.
