Origins (1880s)

Catalonia's late 19th century industrial boom funded a new bourgeoisie eager to display wealth. Modernisme combined French Art Nouveau curves with Catalan Gothic and Mudejar references.

Key architects

Antoni Gaudi (Sagrada Familia, Casa Batllo). Lluis Domenech i Montaner (Palau de la Musica, Hospital Sant Pau). Josep Puig i Cadafalch (Casa de les Punxes).

Distinctive features

Floral and animal motifs in iron and ceramic. Trencadis (broken-tile mosaics). Asymmetric facades. Stained glass and natural light. Use of regional brick and stone.

Best modernisme route

Walk Passeig de Gracia (Manzana de la Discordia: Casa Batllo, Casa Amatller, Casa Lleo Morera). Then Palau de la Musica Catalana and Hospital Sant Pau.

Modernisme vs Art Nouveau

Modernisme leans heavier on regional identity (St George dragon imagery, the four red bars of Catalonia, Mediterranean light). Art Nouveau is more cosmopolitan and less religious.
