The Gaudi color philosophy

Antoni Gaudi designed the stained glass to mark the spiritual journey from birth (east, Nativity) to death (west, Passion) through light. The color choice is not decorative: it is a theological program written in light.

Nativity facade glass (east, warm)

Faces sunrise. Colors: golden yellow, orange, red and warm pink. Symbolism:

  • Yellow and gold: divine light, birth of Christ, dawn.
  • Red and orange: love, life, the warmth of family.
  • Pink and amber: tenderness, motherhood (the Virgin Mary).

Best time: 10:30 to 11:30 in the morning when the rising sun projects color across the central nave.

Passion facade glass (west, cool)

Faces sunset. Colors: deep blue, green, violet and cool turquoise. Symbolism:

  • Blue: depth, the sky, the heavens after death.
  • Green: hope, resurrection, eternal life.
  • Violet: mourning, sacrifice, royalty of Christ as king.

Best time: 16:00 to 18:00 in the afternoon when the setting sun projects cool blues across the apse.

Glass artists

The stained glass was made between 1999 and 2017 by:

  • Joan Vila-Grau (Catalan): the most important contributor, designed nearly all glass after 2000.
  • Workshop Vidrieria Cumellas (Barcelona): manufactured from 2004 onward using mouth-blown antique glass.
  • Original 1955 windows by Eduardo Brossa Soler: a few survive in the apse.

Where to stand for the best photos

  • Central aisle, halfway between entry and altar (best for warm color projection in morning).
  • Apse area, in front of the altar (best for cool color projection in afternoon).
  • Avoid taking photos directly toward windows (they will overexpose).
  • Best photos: floor and pillar reflections of the colored light, not the windows themselves.

What most blogs miss

The stained glass is not finished. Some clear glass panels remain in the upper triforium and the central rose window. They will be replaced with colored glass between 2026 and 2029. So if you visit twice in 5 years you will see noticeably more color the second time.
