Francisco de Paula del Villar (1882 to 1883)

The original neo-Gothic architect resigned over budget disputes after one year. Only the crypt foundations remain from his design.

Antoni Gaudi (1883 to 1926)

Took over at age 31 and dedicated 43 years to the project, the last 12 living onsite. Completed the Nativity facade and the crypt.

Domenec Sugranyes (1926 to 1938)

Continued from Gaudi's 1:25 plaster models. The Spanish Civil War destroyed many original models in 1936.

Francesc de Paula Quintana (1939 to 1966)

Reconstructed the destroyed models from photos and surviving fragments. Built the Passion facade foundations.

Josep Subirachs (1987 to 2018)

Sculpted the controversial Passion facade in his angular cubist style. Some critics called it too modern.

Jordi Faulí (2012 to today)

Current chief architect leading the 2026 finish. Designed the central Tower of Jesus Christ and the Glory facade.
