Why Add a Winery to Your Montserrat Day Trip

The train route from Barcelona to Montserrat passes through the Penedes wine region — Catalonia’s most important wine-producing area and the birthplace of Spanish cava. Most day-trippers pass straight through to the mountain; those who stop discover one of Spain’s most distinctive wine landscapes, a region producing everything from fresh whites to serious red blends, along with the best sparkling wine in the Iberian peninsula.

A combined Montserrat and winery tour typically spends the morning at the mountain and the afternoon at one or two Penedes producers. The order works well: the mountain provides the drama and spiritual atmosphere; the vineyard provides the relaxation, food, and local flavour that rounds the day into a genuinely Catalan experience rather than just a sightseeing checklist.

The Penedes Wine Region

Sant Sadurni d’Anoia is the cava capital — a small town 40 km southwest of Barcelona where Freixenet, Codorniu, and dozens of smaller producers are based. The traditional method cellars (some dating to the 19th century) are open for tours and tastings. A cava tour typically includes the underground wine cellars (millions of bottles ageing in the dark), an explanation of the secondary fermentation process, and a tasting of three to five cavas.

Beyond cava, the Penedes DO produces excellent still wines. The indigenous Xarel·lo grape makes crisp, mineral whites. Garnacha Blanca from older vines produces richer expressions. Torres, the region’s most famous producer, has invested heavily in altitude viticulture — their higher-elevation wines from the Alt Penedes subzone are some of the most interesting whites coming out of Catalonia.

How the Combined Day Flows

Tours depart Barcelona at 08:00-09:00 with hotel pickup. The Montserrat section runs from approximately 10:00 to 13:00 — monastery, Black Madonna queue, Sant Joan funicular if time permits. Lunch is typically at a local restaurant in the Penedes (not a tourist-facing catering operation; most good tours use genuine village restaurants). The winery visit runs 14:30-17:00 with cellar tour and seated tasting. Return to Barcelona by 19:00-20:00.

Tapas are usually served alongside the tasting — pa amb tomàquet, local charcuterie, olives, and cheese that complement the cava and still wines. This is not rushed; the best operators build in 90 minutes at the winery specifically so the experience is unhurried.
